A very brief history of therapeutic ridding & hippotherapy

Ancient Greeks and ancient Egyptians first used riding as a means of therapy. In ancient Greece Aesclipius believed that horses could cure humans. Hippocrates believed that riding was useful for the function of the lungs and the muscles. Xenofon used horses to cure soldiers. In recent history the first scientific study was conducted in 1870 by Chassagne, a French physician in the University of Paris.

Following that various attempts have been made mostly by physiotherapists and physicians but Heipetz was the first to recognize and set TR within a scientific framework (1977). Today, there are many groups of TR and hippotherapy in Europe, the US, Australia, Mongolia, etc.
